Health Assistance Rehabilitation - Aceh Program (HARAP)
One of the first projects that ISTIH had been involved in is the Health Assistance Rehabilitation - Aceh Program (HARAP). The following is information derived from the HARAP website of JTAI (www.jtai.com.au)
Aceh is Indonesia’s northern most province located on the Island of Sumatra. Despite being resource rich, many years of internal conflict and decentralisation has resulted in the little investment by the government within the Health Sector.
In the aftermath of Tsunami on 26 December 2004, more than 150 000 deaths have been confirmed with many more still missing – 406 000 people were displaced.
The goal of HARAP is to strengthen the provision of health system services through capacity building and human resource development of key health sectors including Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacy, Strategic Health Planning and Workforce Development.
ISTIH team members have provided training in disaster and emergency medicine to teams from Banda Aceh both in Australia and in Banda Aceh.
ISTIH has also provided other training in Indonesia in areas such as evaluation of inhalational lung diseases, diet and lifestyle effects on cardiovascular health, cancer control, asthma and other conditions.
ISTIH is partnered in Indonesia with the Sekolah Kedokteran (School of Medicine), University of Indonesia and has close links with two other Indonesian Universities and four hospitals.
